Longevityof face lift results

A facelift does not stop the face from ageing, but it sets the clock back, and you continue to age from a younger starting point.

Because a deep plane facelift lifts the deeper structures of the face, rather than the skin alone, the result tends to last well and to age naturally. How long it lasts varies with your skin, your lifestyle and the way your face ages. Some patients notice the effect for ten years or more, while others choose to refresh it with a smaller procedure after five years or so.

Sun damage

Sun damage ages the skin, and it can shorten how long the result of a facelift lasts.

Protecting the skin from ultraviolet light makes a real difference to how long the result lasts.

Keeping the skin hydrated and well cared for also helps the face look fresh for longer.

Our care continues after the operation, and advice on sunscreen and sun exposure is part of the guidance after surgery.

Smoking

You will be asked to stop smoking, vaping and any other nicotine intake for 4 weeks before and 4 weeks after surgery, to reduce the risk of complications and to give the best result.

Smoking damages the skin by reducing its blood supply and the production of collagen. It causes the loose skin, blemishes and wrinkles that many people want to address with a facelift.

If smoking continues after surgery, the damage continues too, and the result will not last as well.

Maintenance

Some patients choose small additional treatments to extend the life of their facelift.

These may include fat transfer or fillers, to maintain the contours and fullness of the face.

Looking after the skin, with a good skin care routine and, where appropriate, skin treatments such as chemical peels, adds to the effect of surgery and helps the face and neck look youthful for longer.
